JDSY was the latter half of this night's double-header with Charlie Slick. The actual sounds in the studio were just the clack of the electronic drum pads and Joey's voice but it came out real nice showing off a live angle to JDSY's wholeheartedly straightforward pop with an expansive background in experimental electronic music technique. Six songs and one longer composition for drum machine. So far in 2008 JDSY has two new releases in the digital realm and much more on the plate looking forward.

performers:
Joey Sims: computerized sound creation, vocals
Paul Bancell: electronic drums

4.16.08 Music Is Freedom (live remote)

For this, the umpteenth installment in Music Is Freedom series curated by Rob Crozier (executive producer JAV), we did it live remote from Ypsilanti, MI. I just sat in the tiny temporary WCBN studios and played the stream that they were sending from the comfort of somebody's home. As such I don't know who was there or what they were doing to report here, but the sounds are in the manner of freeform radio with shifts from noisy ambience to funky grooves and a lot of territory covered overall. Due to the success of this live remote broadcast experiment we will be continuing to explore the possibilities made possible from this technology.

Drafted By Minotaurs is Ryan Wilson and Ian Fulcher AKA MC Trashpedal doing live improvised music and organic soundscapes. Now bicoastal, having them together is an infrequent treat. To celebrate in the new baby 2008, DbM kicks it New Age with sweeping sounds for meditative relaxation starting off. At just under 24 minutes the throbbing sounds fade down for Matt Jones providing a solo original folk song adding some uncharacteristically restrained accompaniment from MC Trashpedal and finally the Minotaurs take it back over as if to echo the last line Jones sung. Then out of nowhere comes the real Easter egg of this posting, 10 minutes of exclusive live guitar shredding by Ryan Wilson.

performers:
Ryan Wilson-guitar and effects
MC Trashpedal-spacetrumpet, trashpedals, theramin, toy xylophone
Matt Jones-acoustic guitar, singing, songwriting

Viki totally rules. Totally totally rules. I had her on the old friday night/saturday morning midnight-3am Electric Kingdom live electronic show (which was normally hosted by Chris Stecker) almost exactly five years ago and all around that time period a few other CBNers and I were pretty obsessed with her stuff. Rising up from Brighton, MI, somehow fertile ground for
noise/experimental musicians circa late 90s, she brings it all and reportedly is also some kind of super-genius. On this radio performance everybody gets psyched out with some deeply minimal sounds for better than ten minutes stretching the listener's patience with how far the repetition can carry before she flips it by questioning whether we're live yet and going on to a psychedelic onslaught of beats, noises and electronic trickery.

myspace.com/wikedviki

4.26.06 Dustin presents the best of the year's LMS live

For his last show host of the Local Music Show, Dustin put together a solid two-hour show assembled entirely of what he says "are by my estimation the best live performances on the show during that year" (May 2005-April 2006). It's really good all the way through and really captures a lot of varied music from that time period in a nice package. It makes a good first installment of this archival series, which will post a bunch of old live Local Music Show radio performances.
4.2.08 Meat Ice

Meat Ice is a brand new noise band with Thom Elliott, MC Trashpedal and Jon Lackart. I believe that this radio show was their first public performance, so let that be noted in the annals for when they explode. Their style is expressive textural noise with throbbing distortion. The first set is a trance-inducing dirge with gradual but constant movement and throbbing delay at it's core. The second set which starts at about 30:20 has spacetrumpet faded in with the single-note piano ending from the His Name is Alive song "And He's Changing My Words." After a soothingly sweet spacetrumpet solo, Trashpedal kicks in a digital riff and the group erupts into activity and then an agressive ten minutes of screeching noise. A promising start for Meat Ice, incorporating varied strands of the local experimental music culture into a new kind of creature.

mc trashpedal - spacetrumpet, trashpedals
thom elliott - electronics
jon lackhart-guitar, microphone, tape deck

3.19.08 Music Is Freedom

Rob curated the "Music is Freedom" series of live improvisations the first Sunday of each month in 2006-2007. Now we've brought it over to the Local Music Show on Wednesdays with this as the debut. Rob invited frequent Music Is Freedom collaborators John Churchville and Piotr Michalowski, and they are joined by guitarist Jason Burbo of Morsel fame and eclectic musical pedigree. The quartet comes across as a particularly well-oiled machine considering it was the first time they had all played together. Crozier's bass locks in with Churchville's tabla to create a somewhat noncommital groove of which Piotr and Burbo take full advantage. The second set begins at 29:30 with some long tones by Piotr joined by Crozier and eventually joined by an uptempo tabla beat and progressing fluidly through lots of different feels into a bass/tabla outro. The tabla playing feels fully integrated into the sound in this session, which results in a very natural feel despite the unique instrumental array.

rob crozier: electric upright bass
jason burbo: electric guitar
piotr michalowski: tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, flute
john churchville: tabla

"engineered" by jason voss

Night shall eat these girls and boys. is a relatively new group based in Ypsilanti. They brought two guitars, a bass, a keyboard and a laptop and passed them around among themselves. They have a sound all their own slinky slow jams with stuttered beats and smart, long-winded lyrics. They closed out the set with an awesome adaptation of the Supremes "Where Did Our Love Go?" by my favorite local songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland. They do it slowed down with organ and handsnaps, a whistled middle section and not a single "baby baby" misplaced by the backing vocalists. (Sorry for the distorted bits in the first two songs.)

Night shall eat these girls and boys.
