Sufi - a man of the people called Sufiyah who profess the mystic principles of tasawwuf (mysticism).

There are many silsilas (concatenations) in Sufis, but they are all agreed in their principal tenet- submission to a murshid (inspired guide).

The great object of the mystic is to lose his own identity. The sole object of Sufism is to lead the wandering soul onward, stage by stage, until it reaches the desired goal- perfect union with the Divine Being.

The Second century of the Hijra (AD 719-816) saw the emergence of a class of persons wearing garments of coarse undyed wool or Suf and came to be known as "Sufis" or the purified.

The Sufi's are sought not to be involved in wrong- doing in order to obtain a righteous spirit.
They are prayed for to be granted a clean heart and revitalize the right spirit within.

The origin of Sufism was humble, its rise phenomenal, its development rapid, its influence widespread and its impact profound.

Sufism, born in Arabia, was in course of time reborn in other countries of the world. It conquered nations inturn and nations conquered it.

In Sufism it is believed that Muhammad (pbuh) is the seal of Prophets. There are no more Prophets to come after him because with his coming the full moon of Prophet hood was reached.

The Sufis - according to the words of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh): "The gnostics are the inheritors of Prophets" - believe that Allah's mercy is such that He would not leave humanity without living guides.

Hence, that is why There are always 124000 living (Awliya) saints in every age.

Mowlaya salli wasallim daa iman abadan
'Ala habiibika kheyril khalqi kulli him

Muhammadun sayyidul kowneyni wa thaqaleyni
Wal fariiqeyni min unrbinw wamin aajami

Aap hein khazrat muhammad sarware har do saraa
Aap hein 'arb o 'ajam jin o bashar ke peshwa


He is Muhammad peace be upon him;
the lord of the both the worlds;
the lord of man and all the hidden parts;
The lord of the arabs & the lord of the rest of the world.

Huwal habiib ulladhi turja shafa 'aatuhu
Likulli howlim minal ahwaali muqtaahimi

Aap hein mahboob e haq or shafi' e roz e jaza
Naagahaani aafton main aap ke hei aasraa

He is the dearest, to whom hopes
can look forwardfor succor
and redress in all befallings,
calamities and sudden frights.

Ya akramal khalqi maali man aloo dhubihi
Siwaaka 'inda hululil haadithil amaami

Akram ul makhluq or maangun mein kiss se panaah
Haadsaat e 'aam main hein aap meri takya gaah

O most generous of all!
Who else is there to give me protection
in sudden calamities & common mis-haps?
Surely there is none but You.

Fa inna min juudi kad dunya wa da rataha
Waamin 'ulumika 'ilm al lowhi wal qalaami

Be shuba donon jahaan hein aap ka juud o karam
'Ilm kul hei aap ka or juz wa hei loh o qalam

This world and it's counterpart; the other world,
owe their existence to Your liberality.
Even the knowledge contained in the Pen and the Tablet
is just a fragment of the sciences You are the master of!
